부산시립미술관의 개관과 함께 시작된 《젊은 시각 새로운 시선》전은 정례전으로 지금까지 총 17회를 거치며 부산 지역의 76명의 청년 작가들을 소개하고 지원해 왔다. 올해부터 작가 공모제로 전환해 ‘부산작가 글로벌 프로모션’을 주창하며, 보다 열린 기회를 제공하는 전시로 확장되었다. 특히 지난해부터 본격적으로 추진된 “NEW 젊은 시각 새로운 시선” 프로젝트는 다음 네 가지 목표를 중심으로 운영되고 있다. 첫째, 지역성의 세계화를 위한 새로운 글로컬리티 담론 제시. 둘째, 학예연구실 내부 인력뿐 아니라 국내외 미술 전문가들과의 협업을 통한 전시의 투명성과 전문성 강화. 셋째, 비평 워크숍, 국내외 전시 기회 제공, 네트워크 확장 등 다면적이고 장기적인 작가 지원 프로그램 실행. 넷째, ‘미술 생태계 균형화 프로젝트’라는 부제에 걸맞게 중앙과 지역 간의 간극을 좁히며 건강한 문화 생태계를 구축하는 것이다. 기존의 《젊은 시각 새로운 시선》은 특정 주제나 개념에 맞는 작가를 선정하는 경우도 있었지만, 작가들이 자신만의 개성을 마음껏 표현할 수 있도록 기획된 점이 가장 큰 특징이었다. 2024년 작가 공모에서는 ‘부산을 중심으로 성장했다’고 스스로를 규정한 부산 출생·정주·출향 작가 158명이 지원했으며, 부산시립미술관 학예 인력과 국내외 미술 전문가들이 약 두 달에 걸쳐 총 세 차례의 심사를 거쳐 최종 8명의 작가를 선정하였다.

선정된 작가들과 함께 만들어가는 본 전시는 다음과 같이 구성된다. 1층에는 강이경, 김미래, 김태성, 박현성의 작업이 전시된다. 강이경은 회화와 판화적 실험, 설치미술을 통해 숨겨지거나 드러나지 않는 공간의 구조와 미완의 상태를 시각적으로 탐구한다. 김미래는 감정을 드로잉으로 시각화하며, 감정의 가변성과 서사적 특성에 주목하는 작업을 지속하고 있다. 김태성은 회화의 표현 가능성을 확장하고, 이를 현대적 맥락 속에서 재구성하는 실험을 선보인다. 박현성은 신체와 외부 환경 간의 관계를 탐구하며, 피부를 감각과 자극의 경계로 삼아 작업을 전개한다.

2층에는 김미래, 박현성, 유장우, 유하나의 작업이 전시된다. 유장우는 자본주의와 기술이 만들어낸 사회심리적 구조를 분석하고, 감각과 개념이 형성되고 소비되는 방식을 영상으로 탐구한다. 유하나는 타자화된 존재와 그에 얽힌 정치적 맥락, 심리적 분열성을 주제로 사회 속 불안정한 상태를 실험적 서사로 풀어낸다.

3층에는 김재원, 박지혜, 김태성의 작업이 전시된다. 김재원은 영상, 사진, 언어를 활용해 정체성, 질병, 기억의 확장성을 탐구하며, 퀴어 및 HIV/AIDS 관련 서사를 재구성한다. 박지혜는 조각, 설치, 퍼포먼스를 통해 인간관계 속에서 발생하는 모순과 실수를 시각화하고, 보이지 않는 존재들의 삶과 목소리를 담아낸다.

전시의 시작을 설명하고자 수류만개(水流滿開)라는 표현을 떠올려 본다. 수류만개는 ‘물이 흐르고 꽃이 만발한다는’ 뜻을 담고 있다. 참여작가 8명과 함께 전시를 준비하며, 기획자는 작품의 표면적 성과보다 그 깊이를 이해하고자 했다. 이들은 서로 다른 시각 언어와 매체를 사용하지만, 모두 자신만의 자연스러운 언어를 바탕으로 작업을 전개하고 있기 때문이다. 물이 자연스럽게 흐르고 꽃이 피어나듯, 작품의 깊이를 이해하기 위해선 흘러가는 시간 속에서 자연스럽게 드러나는 작가만의 장점을 오래도록 지켜보는 태도가 필요하다.

Since its launch alongside the opening of the Busan Museum of Art, Young Vision, New Perspective has presented 76 emerging artists from the Busan region across 17 editions, consistently supporting their artistic growth. In 2024, the exhibition transitioned to an open-call format under the initiative “Global Promotion of Busan Artists,” expanding into a platform that offers broader and more inclusive opportunities. Rebranded last year as NEW Vision and Perspective, the project now operates around four key objectives: first, to develop and present new discourses on glocality that position regional identity within a global context; second, to strengthen the exhibition’s transparency and curatorial rigor through collaboration not only within the museum’s curatorial team but also with national and international art professionals; third, to build a long-term, multifaceted artist support system—including critical workshops, domestic and international exhibition opportunities, and expanded networking for participating artists; and fourth, to narrow the gap between central and regional art communities, contributing to a healthier and more balanced cultural ecosystem—true to the project’s subtitle, Project for a Balanced Art Ecosystem. From 1999 to 2023, Young Vision, New Perspective distinguished itself by avoiding predetermined themes or curatorial constraints, instead offering artists a platform to fully express their individuality and creative voices. For the 2024 open call, 158 artists—whether born in Busan, currently based there, or formerly affiliated with the city—applied under the shared premise of having grown as artists in relation to Busan. Over the course of two months and three rounds of review, the Busan Museum of Art’s curators, together with national and international art experts, selected eight final participants.

The exhibition unfolds across three floors, developed in close collaboration with the selected artists. The ground level presents works by Leekyung Kang, Mirae Kim, Kim Taesung, and Hyunsung Park. Leekyung Kang visually investigates the structure of hidden or unrevealed spaces and their incomplete conditions through painting, experimental printmaking, and installation. Mirae Kim visualizes emotional states through drawing and continues her exploration of their fluidity and narrative potential. Kim Taesung expands the expressive possibilities of painting, reconfiguring the medium’s language within a contemporary context. Hyunsung Park explores the relationship between the body and its external environment, conceptualizing the skin as a boundary of sensation and stimulus.

On the second floor, works by Mirae Kim, Hyunsung Park, Jangwoo You, and Hana Yoo are on view. Jangwoo You analyzes the socio-psychological structures shaped by capitalism and technology, using video to examine how sensation and concept are formed and consumed. Hana Yoo engages themes of otherness, as well as the political contexts and psychological fragmentation that surround it, crafting experimental narratives that trace the instability of identity within contemporary society.

The final floor showcases works by Jaewon Kim, Jihye Park, and Kim Taesung. Jaewon Kim explores the expansiveness of identity, disease, and memory through video, photography, and language, reconstructing narratives surrounding queer identity and HIV/AIDS. Jihye Park uses sculpture, installation, and performance to visualize contradictions and missteps within human relationships, amplifying the lives and voices of unseen or overlooked figures.

To articulate the spirit of this exhibition, the phrase 수류만개 (水流滿開) came to mind—meaning as water flows, flowers bloom. In preparing this exhibition alongside the participating artists, the curatorial focus was not on immediate or surface-level outcomes, but on understanding the deeper undercurrents of each practice. Just as water flows and flowers bloom in their own time, a true understanding of an artwork’s depth requires a sustained, patient gaze—one that allows each artist’s unique strength to emerge organically over time. This exhibition was realized through the joint efforts of the Busan Museum of Art and the Sungkok Art Museum. With sincere gratitude to everyone involved, we hope that this exhibition will linger in memory—like water in motion and flowers in bloom—naturally, as time flows.
