‘New Rising Artist’는 역량 있는 젊은 예술가들의 작품세계와 창조적 에너지를 소개하기 위해 새롭게 마련한 기획전이다. 그 첫 번째 2020 New Rising Artist《불완(不完)의 꽃》展은 회화와 조각 장르에서 활동하는 만 40세 이하의 제주 출신 작가 강주현, 김강훈, 김선일, 좌혜선이 참여한다.

‘입체사진 드로잉’이라는 새로운 형태와 확장된 사유가 반영된 조각 작업을 전개하는 강주현, 시선을 끄는 화면으로 세계 내 존재 상호 간의 관계성에 관한 이야기를 풀어내는 김강훈, 강렬한 인체 형상의 전통적 구상 조각을 통해 현대인의 자화상을 뚝심 있게 표현하는 김선일, ‘끼니’와 ‘육체’, 그리고 ‘안전과 불안전의 경계적 상황’을 그리며 인간 생(生)의 본질적 문제를 들여다보는 좌혜선, 이들은 모두 회화와 조각이라는 전통적 장르 안에서 각자 분명한 색과 이야기가 있는 작업을 지속해 오고 있다.

전시명 ‘불완(不完)의 꽃’은 ‘완전히 이루어지지 못함’이라는 ‘불완(전함)’의 사전적 의미를 넘어, 불완의 존재, 불완의 상태가 이루어내는 다양한 형태의 결실을 뜻한다. 기존의 예술 규범으로부터 주체적으로 벗어난 새로운 지향점의 예술 형태와 삶 속 기본 단위의 생활, 그리고 여러 관계성 속에서 파생하는 불완의 여러 모습들을 가감 없이 펼쳐낸 이번 전시는 우리 삶 속에서 불완은 어떻게 그 꽃을 피우는지 진지하게 생각해볼 수 있는 특별한 기회가 될 것이다.

‘New Rising Artist’ is a newly planned exhibition to introduce the artistic world and creative energy of emerging young artists as the first exhibition of 2020. The participating artists for New Rising Artists, Kang Juhyeon, Kim Kanghoon, Kim Seonil, and Jwa Haesun, are all under the age of 40 and active in the fields of painting and sculpture.

Kang Juhyeon focuses on sculptural work reflecting the new ‘stereoscopic photograph’ form and the expansion of contemplation. Kim Kanghoon uses eye-catching screens to unfold narratives relating to relationships experienced in the world. Kim Seonil depicts portraits of modern people through the traditional figurative sculpture of powerful human figures. Jwa Haesun contemplates the fundamental questions of human existence by painting ‘meal’, ‘human body’, and ‘the boundary situation between safety and unsafety’. These artists have continuously created works with specific colors and stories within the traditional genres of painting and sculpture.

The title ‘Incomplete Flower’ means the diverse fruits generated from incomplete existence. It also refers to incompletion and instability beyond the lexical meaning of ‘unfinished’ or imperfection. This exhibition displays works that unfold the diverse traces of incompleteness that derive from the novel direction beyond pre-existing artistic norms, our simple everyday lives, and our various relationships. This exhibition, therefore, will be a special opportunity to earnestly reflect on how incompleteness blossoms in our life.
