자연과 우리는 어떤 관계일까? 이 관계는 진정 마땅하게 이뤄져 왔던 것일까? 그것은 과연 누구를 위해, 또 무엇을 위해 맺어졌을까?
나아가 우리는, 주변 모든 대상으로부터 무엇을 보고자 했을까? 또 무엇을 얻고자 했던 것일까? 이 관계가 과연 올바르다 말할 수 있을까? 온갖 위기가 들끓는 현시대 속에서 우리는 과연 어디를 향해 나아가야 할까? 더불어 예술은 무엇을 할 수 있을까?
2022 경남작가조명전 《박봉기: 두 번의 산책》은 경남을 기반으로 국내외를 넘나들며, 35년간 작품 활동을 이어온 작가 박봉기의 예술 세계를 집중 조명하고자 한다. 서두에서 언급한 질문들은 박봉기의 예술을 통해 우리가 사유해야 할 다양한 주제들을 제안하고 있다. 팬데믹과 기후위기, 다양한 생태적 이슈들이 끊임없이 쏟아져 나오는 현 상황들 아래에서 우리에게 주어진 시대의 과제들을 예술로써 다시금 바라보고자 하는 것이다.
작가 박봉기는 자연과 뗄 수 없는 작업을 이어오고 있다. 자연 공간에서, 자연을 재료로, 자연에 대해 이야기한다. 이를 통해 작가는 어떤 말을 전하고 있을까? 또한 지금, 가공의 장소 미술관에서 우리는 과연 무슨 메시지를 읽어야 하는 것일까? 실제로 작가의 20여 년간의 작업들은 주로 바깥에서, 자연친화적 공간 속에서 이뤄져 왔다. 이러한 야외에서 어울림의 조형으로 제작된 작가의 작품들은, 또 다른 자연 공간으로 자리하며 다양한 관객의 조용한 쉼터로서 작용했다. 작가는 이러한 조형들을 통해 어린 시절부터 자신이 배우고 경험했던 자연의 위안과 정서적 휴식의 상황을 다시금 선사하고자 한다. <호흡>이라는 작품명은 작가의 주요한 메시지가 되었다. 생을 위한 근본적 활동인 신체의 기능적 호흡(그것은 분명 자연과의 관계 속에서 이뤄진다), 이와 더불어 우리를 둘러싼 모든 환경, 모든 대상(나 자신과 타인, 자연을 포함한 비-인간의 모든 대상)과 함께 어우러지는 호흡은 시대적 상황과 맞물려 더더욱 요구되는 삶의 태도임에 틀림이 없다.
전시명 ‘두 번의 산책’은 다양한 의미로써 기능한다. 작가의 작품은 주로 신체적 감각을 통해 우리의 의식을 일깨워 주는데, 이를 편안하게 산책하듯 체험하고 사유해 보는 것이다. 관객은 모든 감각, 즉 보고 만지고 직접 그 속을 걸어보며 얻는 다양한 감각들을 통해 첫 번째 산책을 경험할 수 있다. 이는 나아가 조금 전 감각 했던 작품의 재료, 형태, 공간의 분위기, 전달하고자 하는 메시지 등 이 모든 것들에 대한 사유의 산책(두 번째 산책)을 유도하게 된다.
한편 이번 전시는 두 축의 작품으로 구성되었다. 먼저 미술관 내외에서는 건축적 조형의 새로운 작품들을 만날 수 있다. 관객은 이렇듯 도심으로 초대된 작가의 작품을 각자의 감각으로 경험하며, 첫 번째 산책을 하게 된다. 이어진 전시의 후반부에서는 사진과 영상을 통해 작가의 장소특정적 작품들을 만날 수 있다. 이는 각각의 장소를 직접 방문할 수 없었던 관객에게, 상상의 자연 속에서 또 다른 산책을 경험하기를 제안하고 있다. 관객은 이러한 두 축의 작품과 전시 구성을 통해 작가의 작품을 새롭게 경험하며, 그 의미를 보다 다층적으로 고민해볼 수 있을 것이다. 나아가 주변 대상들과 맺어온 수많은 관계들에 대해 다시 한 번 돌아보며, 생태주의적 삶의 가치에 대해 깊이 있는 사유의 시간을 가져볼 수 있을 것이다.
생물학자 레이첼 카슨(1907~1964)의 저서 『침묵의 봄』(1962)은 과학기술의 남용으로 인해 봄이 오더라도, 꽃은 보이지 않고, 새소리가 들리지 않을 미래에 대해 경고하였다. 이는 곧 전 세계인에게 환경 문제의 위기를 쉽고 빠르게, 보다 깊고 생생하게 알릴 수 있는 계기가 되었고, 대대적인 환경 운동을 촉발시켰다. 당시 다양한 보도를 통해 전해진 수많은 환경 위기의 알림들 사이에서, 한 생물학자가 쓴 조용한 문학의 울림은 예술의 역할을 되돌아보게 했다. 그리고 지금, 그로부터 60년이 흘렀다. 온갖 상황들이 난무하는 위기의 시대 아래에서 여전히 풀어야 할 수많은 과제들 속에서, 우리는 과연 어떠한 태도로써 그 대안을 찾아야 할 것인가? 아래 시구절로 그의 답을 대신하고자 한다.

What relationship do we have with nature? Has this relationship been a genuinely proper one all the way through? For whom, and for what, has it been forged?
Moreover, what have we sought to see from all the objects around us? And what have we tried to gain from it? Can we be sure that this is the right kind of relationship? Where should we be headed in the midst of all kinds of crises? And, what can art do?
2022 G MASTER 《Park Bonggi: Once More》 is to intensively shed light on Park’s universe of art as an artist based on Gyeongnam producing artworks for 35 years at home and abroad. The above questions are food for thought for various topics to mull over through his art. The exhibition is intended to examine the tasks and missions given to us through the medium of art amid the endless influx of all sorts of issues including the pandemic, climate crisis and wide-ranging ecological agenda.
Park has been producing work that has been inseparable from nature: he talks about nature in nature using materials from nature. What message doe he convey by doing so? And, what message should we interpret in a fictional(man-made) space of an art museum?
In fact, Park’s works of 20 years have been produced mainly outdoors, or in a nature-friendly space. His works have also become another natural space, serving as a quiet resting place for audience. Through these sculptures, Park intends to offer consolation from nature and emotional rest that he has learned and experienced since childhood. The title of his work Breath has become his key message. The functional breathing of the body as a fundamental activity for living (which is certainly done in relation to nature), and the breathing in harmony with our surroundings and objects (oneself and others, all non-human objects including nature) must be an attitude of life needed more than ever before in today’s world.
The title of the exhibition <Once More> connotes various meanings. As his works tend to awaken our consciousness through physical senses, the exhibition was intended to experience and think about it as if people would feel at home in taking a walk. The audience can experience the first stroll through different senses by seeing and touching the exhibits and taking a walk within. The sensuous experience induces them to take a contemplative walk (strolling once more) on all this – materials and forms of the exhibits they have just sensed, feeling the ambience of the space and the message to be conveyed. Meanwhile, this exhibition consists of works in two axes. First, new architectural sculptures are encountered in the art museum. The audience would experience Park’s oeuvre invited to be displayed in the urban space in their own senses as they take their first stroll. Then, in the second half of their exhibition tour, they can meet Park’s site-specific works through photography and video. It suggests them to experience another layer of strolling within the imaginary setting of nature as they could not visit each place in person. The audience would then be able to experience his works anew through his works and composition of the exhibition in the duality of axis, while mulling over the meanings in a multifaceted manner. They would also look back on the numerous relationships they have formed with those around as they contemplate over the value of living an ecological life.
Biologist Rachel Carson(1907~1964) alarmed in her book <Silent Spring> on the future world devoid of flowers or natural song of birds even if spring comes because of the abuse of science and technology. It has ignited a massive environmental movement, while letting the world know of the environmental crisis easily, promptly, and more deeply and vividly. The quiet literary resonance written by the biologist amid countless alarms and warnings on the environmental crisis covered by all sorts of media was a catalyst to look back on the roles of art. And 60 years have passed since then. How are we supposed to look for the alternatives with what kind of attitude amid so many pending issues and circumstances in the era of crisis? The answer might be found from the following verse:
