김태연: 당신 자신을 마주하는 순간

‘자아’ 시리즈는 인간으로서 자아에 대한 치열한 고민을 담고 있다. 그것은 강력한 사회적 관습에 갇힌 자기 자신의 표현에서 출발한다. 

그녀의 작품은 집단적 규율 속에서 흔들리는 개인성을 포착한다. 그녀가 한국의 가부장제를 견뎌온 여성이라고 해도, 자기 자신에 대한 '정신'은 젠더의 문제에만 국한되는 것이 아니다.

자신을 되찾는 과정은 자신과 주변과의 관계를 파악하는 것으로 완성된다. 그 과정에서 확실성과 불확실성의 충돌이 생겨난다. 두껍지만 날카로운 클레이의 마티에르로 동요하는 자아의 이미지를 시각적으로 담아낸다. 

피겨 앤 그라운드 형식과 강력한 색상의 대비는 다른 방식의 초상화를 만들어내고, 관람자의 시선을 관람자의 얼굴로, 그들의 세계관으로 향하게 한다.

Gim Tae Yeon: The moment you face yourself 

Gim Tae Yeon's 'Ego' series is the contemplation of the self as a human being. It begins with the expression of aspiration suppressed by solid social conventions. The chair that often appears in her artworks represents a role given to women and a self-portrait of herself trapped in it.

She captures the swaying individuality in the collective discipline. Even if she is a woman who has endured the patriarchal system in Korea, the spirit of being faithful to oneself is not limited to gender issues.

Regaining oneself is completed by figuring out one's relationship with surroundings. At the moment, a clash of certainty and uncertainty arises on canvas. With thick but sharp matiere of clay, she visually encapsulates agitating images of ego. 

Figure-and-ground with strong contrast in color creates a different way of portrait, directing the viewer's gaze to the viewer's face, to their worldview.
