릴레이 기획초대전XIII 《한국생활도자 100인전: 백자 너머의 백자》
조선백자를 너머 또 다른 백자로 확장해가는 이 시대 백자 이야기
경기생활도자미술관 대표 기획전 《한국생활도자 100인전》이 올해로 13회를 맞이했다. 한국생활도자 100인전은 해마다 1~2회 진행을 목표로 기획 의도에 맞는 작가를 선정해 백 명의 도예가를 릴레이 형식으로 소개한다. 2012년을 시작으로 11년째 이어온 경기생활도자미술관의 장기 프로젝트로, 미술관 정체성을 담아 도자예술의 공예적 가치와 쓰임의 미학적 가치를 100인의 작품으로 전하고자 한다.
이번 100인전 주제는 백자이다. 한국은 조선백자라는 뿌리 깊은 백자 전통을 가지고 있다. 조선백자의 물질적·정신적 유산은 과거로부터 이어져 현재까지 한국인의 삶 곳곳에 스며들어 있다. 한국 도예 작가 역시 그 연장선에서 작업을 이어가고 있다. 조선백자가 지니고 있는 쓸모를 찾고 전통을 너머 다양한 시도와 실험으로 현대 백자 이야기를 풀어내는 작가 여섯 분을 모셨다. 白磁를 너머 백자로 확장해가는 이 시대 백자의 모습을 여섯 분의 작품으로 담아내고자 한다. 전시는 전시실마다 개인전 형식으로 펼쳐진다. 하나의 공간에서 한 작가의 작품세계를 집중해서 살펴보고 백자라는 주제 아래 전개되는 여러 작품을 비교하며 작품을 즐겨볼 수 있다.
작품에 대한 이해를 돕고 그들의 발자취를 기록하기 위해 참여 작가 인터뷰 영상을 준비했다. 작가마다의 인터뷰 영상은 도예 그리고 백자에 대한 그들의 철학을 들려준다. 작가 인터뷰 속 그들의 작업 태도를 유심히 관찰하고 작품을 다시 들여다보면 색다른 감응을 얻을 수 있다. 그들의 작업에 깊게 빠져들어 백자와 한발 더 가까워지기를 기대한다.
100 Korean Ceramic Artists’ Exhibition XIII
《White Porcelain : Beyond White Porcelain》
This year marks the 13th edition of the renowned exhibition 100 Korean Ceramic Artists, a premier special exhibition hosted by the Gyeonggi Museum of Ceramic Design. Held once or twice a year, the exhibition series showcases the works of 100 Ceramic Artists, selected for their compatibility with the curatorial concept, in a relay format. As a long-standing project of the Museum that has continued for 11 years since 2012, the exhibition seeks to convey, through the artworks of the 100 artists, the craft value of ceramic art and the aesthetic value inherent in its practical use as well as the core identity of the museum.
The theme of this year’s exhibition is 'white porcelain'. Korea is home to a longstanding porcelain tradition known as Joseon white porcelain. Its material and spiritual legacy has continued to permeate Korean life since it first appeared in the Joseon period, with Korean ceramicists still working in harmony with this heritage in the present day. This year, we feature six artists who have been exploring new possibilities for the use of Joseon porcelain while transcending established ceramic tradition through contemporary reinterpretations that are based on diverse trials and experiments. Each of the six artists will be assigned their own individual exhibition room akin to a solo exhibition, where the audience will be able to witness the white porcelain of the contemporary era that continues to expand the genre beyond its traditional boundaries. Each space dedicated to a single artist will encourage the audience to discover a singular artistic world in a focused manner one at a time while helping them compare diverse artworks unfolding under the overarching theme of white porcelain.
The museum has created videos featuring interviews with participating artists to help the audience better understand their works and to record their artistic process.
Each artist’s interview highlights their personal philosophy on ceramic art and white porcelain. Viewers who pay close attention to the artists’ outlook on the act of artistic creation conveyed in the interviews will subsequently be able to experience novel sensations from their artworks. We hope that the interviews will deepen the audience’s understanding of the work of these artists and bring them closer to the art of white porcelain.
